I have went through these 4 questions and just can't seem to figure how you came up with these answers. I am looking for some help in understanding these problems. Thank you!

Question 1: Tim has a Personal Auto Policy providing PIP coverage with a $1,000 deductible. Tim is injured in his vehicle and sustains $9,000 in medical bills. How much will his PIP pay?

The correct answer: $6,400

Question 2: Jim has a Personal Auto Policy with basic PIP. Gail, his Florida neighbor, also has a Personal Auto Policy with basis PIP. Jim is driving Gail's car, is involved in an accident and suffers $15,000 in medical bills. How much will Gail's policy pay under her PIP?

The correct answer: Gail's policy will not pay PIP benefits. Jim's policy will pay the maximum under his policy of $10,000.

I saw this later in Unit 3- “It should be noted that the exemption of liability goes with the vehicle rather than the person causing the accident. For example, if a person who does not insure his own vehicle is driving an insured vehicle belonging to someone else, he or she is exempt from liability.”

Question 3: Pete has a Personal Auto Policy with basic PIP. Pete driving his car takes his son, Joe, and his son’s friend, Jim, on a trip to Texas. Pete is involved in an auto accident. Pete suffers $8,000 in injuries, Joe suffers $5,000 in injuries, and Jim suffers $6,000 in injuries. How much will Pete's PIP pay for all injuries?

The correct answer: $10,400

Question 4: Joe carries $2,000 Medical Payments coverage on his automobile. Joe's daughter used a friend's automobile and was involved in an accident resulting in $3,500 in medical bills. The friend carries Medical Payments coverage in the amount of $3,000. How much will Joe's policy pay, if any? (Ignore PIP coverage)

The correct answer. C. $500

this is how I understand the questions...

#1 [(loss) - (deductable)] x 80%  (9000-1000) = $8000 x 80% = $6400

i got it wrong the first time had to work the math backwords and check the book

#2 PIP follows the driver

#3 pete and joe are covered.  the accident is out of state, becasue they are househould residents.  the son's friend is not covered under pete's insurance because he is not a member of their household.   8000 + 5000 = $13000 x 80% = $10,400  no deductable on this one.

#4 ignoring pip is the kicker, it makes the coverage follow the car not the driver. so the auto owners insurance voers the first $3000 and then joe's insurance covers $500 as an excess poolicy...

like i said this is how I understand it.  but i'm only on chapter 8

Bret - I love it when a student responds to another student's questions.  I just wanted to say that you are "spot-on".  When you can explain concepts to someone, it shows you have a very solid understanding of these questions.  Good job!

Hello, everyone:

I'm new to this networking msgs, Hope everybody reading this msg is doing wonderful.

Yes, as Mr Bradburn says, I love it when student help another student.  I would like to give you also my feedback, regarding the online courses.  I've learned, the Online Classes is not complete without the book.  Sometimes I finish a Unit and when it comes the quiz I get questions I haven't read in the chapter, so I check the book instead and I find the answer.

Please remember, If you don't see the answer to your question, check the study manual.

Good Luck !!

Hi Bret,

In question #4, why would pip pay more than 10, 000? Isn, t it capped at 10, 000?

Edit :Nevermind, PIP pays per person per accident. Just answered myself.

I'm confused on #3 why is there no deductible if it is a "basic" pip coverage, in which a deductible 1,000 deductible applies .

Stephanie,

Basic PIP coverage means a $10,000 policy limit with no deductible.  If a deductible applies the amount must be stated in the question.
