Lesson 1: Foundation of Ethics
Answer
U1-L1-P10
- Take the job offered by the first company that was perfect for him.
If he broke his agreement by just saying he got a better offer, this would not be considered ethical. If everyone did this, agreements would be meaningless. This situation could go both ways; the company hiring could tell him a day before he was to start that they found a better candidate and offered his job to someone else.
- Take the job offered by the second company and be miserable.
This is an option and would be ethical, but he would most likely not do his job as well as he could if he was not happy.
- Go to the second company and explain his problem and see if they would release him from the agreement.
This would be ethical and a viable choice. If they released him from the agreement, he would be free to work for the first company.
- Work for the second company for one day and quit.
This would not be an ethical choice. The second company would have to begin the search for a new hire, and the position would still be vacant, causing a financial burden on the company. This would be working under false pretense.
- Work for the second company for 30 days and give his two-week notice.
This could be a viable choice although it would be better to explain his problem prior to beginning, work and if they really didn’t want to release him from the agreement until they found a replacement then he could agree to work for 30 days with a two week notice if a replacement hadn’t been found within that time period.
