Getting Hired

Getting Hired

Jake just got a degree in business after four years of hours of study and hard work. The job search begins but landing a job is not as easy as Jake thought it would be. After a few months of interviews, he found the perfect job in Boston. He has the right skills, the position is perfect, and it is near his hometown. The interview went great, and he was told that they would let him know in a week, but he looked like a promising candidate for the position.

Three days later, Jake was called, and the news was not good. The company was under a hiring freeze due to some financial issues. Jake was devastated. All his friends from college had already gotten jobs, and here he was still unemployed. Even his parents were putting some pressure on him to get a job to help defray the college expenses.

Jake began his job search and interviews again. Due to the pressure from his friends and family, Jake finally accepted a position at a company that was in another state and a position that was not even close to the perfect position at the first company of his choice. The second company signed a contract with him and offered him employment. He was to start his job in two weeks.

A week later after Jake and the second company signed the contract for him to work for them, Jake got a call from the first company saying they got their financial issues under control and if he still wanted the job he could start right away.

What is the ethical thing for Jake to do?
