Women: What to Wear?

We`ll answer this age-old question for women in the work place.

Follow the accepted standards of your company and industry. Color, style and fit are key ingredients whether you wear suits, dresses, slacks, skirts, blouses or sweaters. Suits are the most powerful. Separates (blazers and skirts) in navy blue, gray or black solids are the next most powerful. Dark coat dresses are powerful; short-sleeved pastel or patterned dresses are not. Separates in plaids or patterns have the power of the jacket, however, they lack the power and success of color.

Wear your more powerful and professional clothes when you have important meetings and the more casual styles as they fit into your business calendar. Dresses also are more acceptable in warm weather; however, remember the temperature inside is always around 70 degrees… even when the thermostat hits 100 outside. Pants in the workplace are acceptable nationwide. A suit with a slim knee-length skirt, however, is still considered more formal.

Dark slacks and skirts are a good choice in a business casual environment. Long-sleeve blouses and shirts that coordinate with them are more powerful than short-sleeves, plaids, pastels or frills. They also hide the upper-arm loose skin with which overweight and older women struggle. Carefully choose your clothing in a really casual environment, using as standard what those a notch or two up are wearing.

Steer away from short skirts, tight sweaters and slacks and any cleavage in the workplace. Not only does it demean you and question your intellect - it demeans women in general and gives those who care and want to move forward a harder row to hoe.
