What You Say Through Your Appearance

Let`s begin by looking at what you say before you speak through your appearance. It is impossible to dress in a neutral way; therefore, you are always making a statement either by design or default. Your goal, as a man or woman, is to be in charge (and knowledgeable) about the messages you are sending. This is not just another "dress for success" seminar. We`re going to show you the vital role your appearance plays in your career success.

Men, you may be more skeptical coming into this section, and that`s okay. This visual component - wardrobe selection - for years was left up to your salesperson at your favorite store, your mothers, sisters or wives, what your peers wear or perhaps chance. Times have changed for many of you. It`s vital, even if you wear jeans and a T-shirt, that you understand the psychology behind impression management. After all, you may someday need to switch to dress pants and a long-sleeve shirt ... or even a suit!

Women, while you may be more informed, you have far greater odds to overcome in the business world and need all the help you can get on all fronts. You have to struggle more to be taken seriously in the corporate environment right out of college. In the latter years of your career you find that furrowed brows, wisdom lines under your eyes and graying hair are much more acceptable (and becoming!) on men, or so society seems to dictate. And, for some of you, you are just ready to begin your corporate ascent at 50 if you chose to spend your child-rearing years at home. You may finally have the freedom and the desire to spend the extra hours in the office and don`t want your appearance to hold you back.

About 90 percent of your body is usually clothed in business situations; therefore, the color, style, fit and quality of what you wear definitely impacts how people perceive you. The other 10 percent is your grooming, and the major items are haircut and style, manicured nails, cleanliness, fragrances, facial hair (men) and makeup (women).

Perception is R____!
