How to use a dictionary

Introduction:

In order to do well on the Arts and Literature portion of the GED, you need to be able to understand sentences, paragraphs, and whole passages. Usually we can read them and get the general gist of what is being said, but do you ever have a problem with individual words? A good vocabulary helps you to understand more of what you read.

There are a number of ways to build your vocabulary. In this section, you will practice dictionary skills. Then we will work with syllables, word parts, synonyms, and antonyms.

It is important to be able to use a dictionary. Dictionaries allow you to figure out the meanings of words on your own, and to continue to increase your vocabulary across your life time.

Words represent ideas. If you don't understand what a word means, you can't think about the idea that they represent, much less understand or discuss it. Knowing how to use a dictionary with ease will also be a helpful skill for parents wanting to help their children with homework.

The following question is a review of the content on this page. Answer it and then click below to check your response.
